SharePoint Password Reset for External Users

by Niklas Bendelius in English, SharePoint, Guider

Indroducing a SharePoint application that can be deployed on any SharePoint site, allowing external users to reset their passwords.

A lot of our clients is using SharePoint in a very practical way – to collaborate around documents and other files with their clients and subcontractors. This is a common scenario for large companies that collaborate with different parties and handle large amounts of documents, and we believe it is a much better solution than for example exchanging documents over emails.

Of course, having external collaborators means that you need to have a way to authenticate them against your internal environment. One common way is to create Active Directory accounts for the external users using their existing email accounts.

This does however often mean that the users will get a long, complicated password they will either have to remember (almost impossible) or save in their browser (not good practice). They are also often required to change the password regularly.

If you would like them to change their passwords to something they can remember you quickly realize that it is practically impossible due to the fact that these users do not actually login to a company computer or use any other form of domain authentication besides logging in to the SharePoint itself.

To solve this we have created a SharePoint application that can be deployed on any SharePoint site, allowing external users to reset their passwords. This app enforce all company rules regarding password complexity and it is quite a convenient and easy way for your external collaborators to be able to choose their own password.
